The first thing we notice is how the room feels. Does it feel inviting? Is there a sense of balance? Does everything flow naturally, or does something feel a little off?
One of the biggest things we pay attention to is proportion and scale. You can have the most beautiful, expensive sofa in the world, but if it's too large for the space or doesn't work with the surrounding furniture, the room can feel unbalanced. Great design is about understanding how every piece relates to the others.
Another thing we immediately notice is how the furniture is arranged. A living room should encourage conversation, feel comfortable, and allow people to move around naturally. Sometimes, simply repositioning a sofa, changing the size of a coffee table, or adding the right accent chairs can completely transform a space without having to replace everything.
Lighting is another detail that can make or break a room. We always look at how natural light enters the space and how artificial lighting complements it. A beautiful chandelier can become a statement piece, but it's also important to have softer lighting from table lamps and floor lamps. Different layers of lighting create warmth and atmosphere, especially in the evenings.
Then we start paying attention to materials, textures, and craftsmanship. This is something we're particularly passionate about here at Santa Barbara Design Center. A room becomes much more interesting when you combine different elements, like a beautifully upholstered sofa, a handmade wool rug, a natural wood coffee table, and a unique piece of art.
And here's something that people often overlook: the quality of the furniture matters just as much as its appearance. As designers, we notice the construction, the upholstery, the fabrics, and even the way a sofa sits. Beautiful furniture should not only look good on the showroom floor but also feel incredible and hold up beautifully over time.
One of our favorite things to look for is personality. We love homes that feel collected rather than perfectly matched. Maybe it's an antique rug that's been passed down through generations, a sculptural table made from natural wood, or a custom sofa designed specifically for the family who lives there.
These are the details that make a space memorable.
And finally, we always ask ourselves: Does this room reflect the people who live in it?
Because at the end of the day, great interior design isn't about copying a picture from a magazine or following every new trend. It's about creating a space that feels timeless, comfortable, beautiful, and personal.
Here at Santa Barbara Design Center, that's exactly what we love helping our clients achieve. Whether it's finding the perfect handmade rug, creating a custom sofa, or selecting that one special piece that brings the entire room together, we believe every detail makes a difference.
Because the most beautiful rooms aren't necessarily the ones with the most furniture. They're the ones where every piece has a purpose, and everything feels like it belongs.
